The Fireball Ceremony is Stonehaven’s unique way to welcome in the New Year and greet friends and neighbours. As the midnight chimes ring out on December 31st, approximately 40 men and women parade up and down the High Street swinging fiercely flaming balls around their heads. Fireballs are lit and swingers emerge from the street leading to the harbour, helping to speed the Old Year on its way and to herald in the New in ancient style with a highly dexterous performance. The Fireballs start at midnight but the Street Entertainment starts at 11.00pm. Every year, on the eve of Hogmanay (New Year’s Eve), the coastal town of Stonehaven in Scotland ignites with a spectacular celebration known as the Stonehaven Fireball Festival. This unique and captivating event draws both locals and visitors alike, offering a mesmerizing display of fire and ancient Scottish traditions. At the stroke of midnight on December 31st, in the North Sea coastal town of Stonehaven, at least 45 strong Scots, most in kilts, light up the high street by whirling balls of flame and sending showers of sparks into the watching crowd. Hogmanay, or the Scottish New Year, is a particularly heartfelt celebration throughout the country, with more or less spectacular celebrations almost everywhere. Edinburgh, for example, has a very rich program that lasts for 3 days. Welcome in the New Year watching the spectacular sight of a troupe of revellers parading up the street swinging balls of fire around their heads, creating patterns in the air and lighting up the night sky, followed by a firework display. Fireballs are lit on the Shorehead at the top of the slipway at the harbour. The fireballs are swung in a procession up and down the High Street, as far as the upturned cast iron Cannon. The event can last anywhere from 20 minutes to a full hour of masterful displays.
