After 13 months, I finally finished the Duolingo German tree! Here's my assessment of it and of how much I've learned after using it alongside Anki everyday. plus some other tips for anyone learning a language. Warning: long read! I've been using Duolingo since 2014 and my current Hey! I have been learning German with duolingo for a few months now, and after the update I am about 25% through. I'm a bit lost right now as the reordering of the lessons moved some words I didn't know yet to the earlier lessons. Many people repeat Duolingos claim that Duolingo can bring learners to A2-B1 in their language. Duolingo made this claim around the time they updated Spanish and French to 5 unit CEFR courses and this claim only applies to CEFR aligned courses. I’ve completed 97% of the Spanish course. As others said duolingo is never going to give you that ability so say whatever you think of instantly that comes with being actually fluent in any language, but you will understand a lot! but if you were to learn a language with duolingo, german is one of the best languages to use duolingo with Duolingo published some of their own research which showed that their French and Spanish courses variously brought learners to B1/B2. There's a large amount of well-structured content on there, but I think the way to look at it is that there's a "self-regulated" element that will affect your personal results massively. /r/German is a community focused on discussion related to learning the German language. New visitors, please read the FAQ: /r/German/wiki/faq I love learning languages and I will definitely continue duolingo (especially when they add that learning music feature to android), but it will be like an hour once a week instead of these 2 minute bursts at 11.50pm. It's been fun though. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYBODY (I was learning German btw) Duolingo is absolutely not even close to enough for German university, which usually requires a C1 level of German understanding. There are a lot of good answers here, but as someone who has been learning German in Duolingo since 2015, I want to give my two cents too. No, you won't learn German if you only use Duolingo. Many of the sentences are ridiculous and you are forced to repeat them over and over again. That being said I did do 4 years of German in school over 10 years ago. Duolingo is just irritating, I'd rather use textbook drills than see that owl ever again. Ed Swicks books are good for this. I think duolingo can be useful when starting a language from absolutely nothing though. and Nicos weg is a great show, I still rewatch it sometimes If it helps, no one I know can speak German, so I have no irl to speak it with. I only mainly use German with Duolingo and pronouncing the words I know if anyone in my family asks me about a German word they see, or if I point out that a word is German to them. Is this normal for a relatively new German learner? can get you in german speaking areas, especially with people 30 and younger. That's not to say you should abandon German all together! But in a pinch, it's definitely worth a shot. Secondly, most courses that teach Swiss-German do so from High-German. That can be unnerving at first, but might not be as big a deal as you would think.
